About AOCL

Annals of Optometry and Contact Lens (AOCL) has been the official journal of the Korean Optometry Society and Korean Contact Lens Study Society since 2015. Until 2004, it was published as the Journal of the Korean Journal of Optometry and Vision Science. The AOCL is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal that publishes clinical and basic science research along with relevant articles related to optometry, contact lens, and ophthalmology subspecialties.

Aims of AOCL

The primary aim of the AOCL is to provide essential knowledge regarding optometry and contact lens study for ophthalmology residents, general ophthalmologists, and ophthalmology subspecialists, which would promote quality studies on optometry and contact lens by publishing creative, original, clinically significant, and rigorously peer-reviewed research. The ultimate goal of the AOCL is to contribute to human health and well-being by improving and educating the science and technology of optometry and contact lens study.

The AOCL has a large population of readers including ophthalmology residents, general ophthalmologists, and ophthalmology subspecialists. The AOCL promotes lifelong learning for ophthalmologists and provides publishing opportunities to ophthalmology residents. The AOCL is distributed to members of the Korean Optometry Society, medical schools, and libraries to promote the expansion of studies on optometry and contact lens, as well as the academic exchanges among the members of the Korean Optometry Society, the Korean Contact Lens Study Society, and the international ophthalmology society. Having no optometrist system in Korea, Korean ophthalmologists additionally play the role of optometrists. Additionally, as there are many myopic populations and overnight orthokeratology lens users, results of the statistical research on Koreans can attract worldwide attention. As the only optometric journal in Korea, this role is critical and meaningful.

Peer review process

The AOCL emphasizes researching optometry and contact lenses through basic and clinical studies. Previously unpublished cases and diseases specific to optometry, contact lenses (including orthokeratology lens), and the subspecialties of ophthalmology are published through basic and clinical studies and case reports. The manuscripts submitted to the AOCL are qualified by an authoritative peer review system consisting of experienced specialists within each subspecialty. We support accessibility through the online submission system. The full text is available from the official website (, and open access is available since the 2004 issue (Vol. 1, No. 1). The full or part of contents of the published issues has been indexed by Google Scholar, Naver Academic, Korea Citation Index and CrossRef. The AOCL publishes original articles, case reports, letters to the editor, and reviewer and commentaries requested by the editor and is published quarterly, on the 25th day of March, June, September, and December.
