Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate the long-term outcome of keratolimbal allograft (KLAL) in patients with ocular surface disease secondary to limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Methods: Eleven eyes of 10 patients with LSCD as defined by impression cytology, who underwent total or partial KLAL and were followed up at least 36 months, were investigated. Survival rate of graft, risk factor for graft failure, and change of visual acuity were analyzed. Results: Eight eyes of 7 patients underwent total KLAL and 3 eyes of 3 patients underwent partial KLAL. The mean period of graft survival was 17.92±13.64 months (range, 1∼45 months). The cumulative survival rate was 64.3% at 1 years, 28.6% at 2 years, and 28.6% at 3 years postoperatively. Graft survival did not correlated with graft extent. There were no significant changes of visual acuity after surgery. Conclusions: In patients with LSCD, KLAL requires the continuous systemic immune suppression. The survival rate of KLAL declines progressively with time. (Korean J Optom Vis Sci 2007;6(1):29-35)
