Abstract
Purpose
To investigate the incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications of LASIK and LASEK using VISX S4. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from 334 eyes of 183 patients who followed up at least 2 months. LASIK was done in 166 eyes using VISX S4 and Moria M2 of 110 um head and LASEK was performed in 168 eyes with application of 20% alcohol for 30 seconds. The incidences of refractive-related and flap-related complications were analyzed. Results: Free cap, flap fold, and center interface hemorrhage were found in an eye (0.60%), respectively microstriae was observed in two eyes (1.21%) after LASIK. Diffuse lamellar keratitis were developed in 44 eyes (26.5%). Irregular epithelial healing, subepithelial haze of more than Grade 1, and central island were presented in 3 eyes (1.79%), 25 eyes (14.88%) and 2 eyes (1.19%), respectively. Grade 3 or more of subepithelial haze producing visual disturbance was developed in 3 eyes (1.79%). The incidence of undercorrection and overcorrection was 8.43% and 1.81% in LASIK, and 7.14% and 1.79% in LASEK, respectively, which did not show any significant differences between those two. Conclusions: The incidence of refractive related complications was not significantly different between LASIK and LASEK using VISX S4. The visual decrease that can not be corrected was developed in 2.10% after refractive surgery. (Korean J Optom Vis Sci 2006;5(1):1-9)
