Prevalence of anterior polar cataract in five area of Korea

Abstract
Purpose
Little known about is prevalence of anterior polar contact outside korea. We evaluated the prevalence of anterior polar cataract in five area of Korea. Methods: We selected the five hospital each in Seoul, Chungnam, Jeonlanamdo, Jeonlabukdo and Kyoungsangnamdo. The number of total cataract surgery and surgery of patienes with anterior polar cataract was investigated from Aut 2003 to Dec 2003. The types of cataract was classfied the nuclear, contrical, posterior subcapsular and anterior polar lens opacity. Results: The prevanlend of anterior polar cataract in total cataract was 4.73% in 8 month, 5.25% in 9 month, 5.18% in 10 month, 4.30% in 11 month, 2.07% in 12 month. Seoul area showed the heighest prevalence. It presented was 11.90%, 10.20%, 8.62%, 11.90% and 7.14% in 8,9,10,11, and 12 month, respectively. The prevalence of anterior polar cataract in total cataract during, survey was 6.02%. Conclusion: Although this study has the short-term survey, we investigated the prevalence in five area and thus it is belived that our study may serve as the bais of epidemiologic study of anterior polar cataract.
